Hi there, this is my latest buld.
It's a slightly modified pre-built, got it from a friend for free...
I just cleaned everything and swapped the original (ugly as hell & quite useless) Phenom 840 cooler for the original from my old Phenom 955 BE,
now it's 12 - 15c cooler than before. I also added some fans, 1 in the front, 1 to the back and 2 in the door, helps a lot. ;)
As it came with on-board graphics, which I personally can't stand at all, I took the geforce 9500 from the benchtable and put it in. It's absolutley nothing special, but enough for this machine.
Ah, and I put in a BluRay re-writer instead of the old dvd one.

The biggest change is the os.
It's now running Linux , before there was windows xp installed on it (OMG :S )

It's really worth to try out a full installation since it's more stable and easier to use than ever (even my zero-experienced-and-refuses-to-learn-more-about-it best friend runs linux on his laptop ;) ).
yea, you CAN'T run a lot of windows games on it as WINE doesn't support a lot, but you CAN run some classics on it (forget about the new games...).

I'm not a big gamer anyway, any distro you would recommend for a beginner?

try out Linux Mint 18.2 Cinnamon "Sonya" , that's what I use currently.
It runs pretty stable and if needed, there is big community support behind it in their forum or on the net.
My previous problems came from a broken drive, changed it and now everything runs fine.

If you install it on a clean system, there is no need to worry about how to part the disk, it can do it fully automatic (and encrypt it if you check the box).
Features over 80k software packages from the disk and even more over the net.
