Antivirus for Retro builds was created by Nik
Hi !

I want to bring my older systems online from time to time and I'm not sure which AV program to choose for them.
Any ideas which one still supports Win98/2000/XP ?

Ive done a little research tonight, although have not had time to test anything (however I will when I get a free afternoon!)

will try and test these (and others) to confirm if they work or not soon and ill update.

Windows 98
Clamwin For Windows 98 to Windows 10
Avast 4.8 is apparently still receiving updates and supports Windows 95+


Windows 2000
Clamwin For Windows 98 to Windows 10
Avast 4.8 is apparently still receiving updates and supports Windows 95+

Windows XP
AVG For Windows XP
Avast For Windows XP
Clamwin For Windows 98 to Windows 10

Thank you Martin for your research.
I think I'll try Clamwin, had some problems with avast in the past and using avg is like driving your car with the handbrake on... ;)
And it has some detection problems, a good friend of mine used this for years until he had some serious problems with his machine he couldn't explain. When we checked the drive with a live emergency boot cd, there were more than 50 viruses, trojans and "nice" other stuff on it.
yoi might guess how pi***ed of he was , cause he had the pay version of AVG.

Its a shame as AVG was fantastic in the past, going back maybe 15 years! when I last used it.

they were great in the past and nearly everybody I knew used it, always did a good job for a free AV.

I've tried clamwin on Win98 & the Win 2000 system and it runs without any problems.

No problem dude, will fire it on my win98 machine tonight and give it a test also as I've just upped the ram from 32mb to 256mb!

I'm sure Avast bought AVG over a few years back. They have also recently bought c cleaner.

You're right, found this on wikipedia:

Yea I used AVG for years but then it got weighty. I then moved to Avast but recently Ive found there software being more intrusive and even on the home version it seems to be more like adaware as its always trying to sell you stuff..

On my modern machine i just let windows 10 with windows defender do its thing, i was under the impression that was secure enough?

Im the same Martin this and malwarebytes just as an extra. I run a malwarebytes scan every couple of days.

most win 10 users I know added malwarebytes to their system. the defender catches most of the things, but not everything...
as long as you're careful, you should be fine with the defender only. ;)
