The best PC developments in the last 20 years...

The best PC developments in the last 20 years... was created by Martin
So, 20 years ago, 1997, Microsoft were developing Windows 98, Intel brought us the Pentium II and the AGP port was released. 1997 also brought us Winamp, The AMD K6 CPU and a few manufactureres were starting to bring us machines for under £1,000 / $1,000.

So in the last 20 years, what 3 things would you say were the best, landmark or life changing products, services or changes?

ill start with my 3....

3. Broadband internet access - I moved over to fibre optic broadband from 56k in around 2002/2003 and I've never looked back, it makes the web so much better to use, and in turn website creators were able to start really bringing us good content as more people adopted.

2. Multi Core processors - for me the 2nd best product to come to the market for our PC's in the last 20 years, real genuine multi tasking, its not until you try and use something powerful and single core, say a 3.6GHz Pentium 4, with 3GB of ram running Windows XP (a beast in its day) and start multi tasking you realise how good we have it these days.

3. The SSD - For me the best development in the last 20 years as far as hardware goes. Blistering transfer speeds but more importantly the access time makes a machine lightning fast, sometimes even masking the fact it has a weak processor and low system ram! - I cant believe some people still use mechanical hard drives on their daily machine as an OS/Boot drive!

number 4 & 5 would be WORKING plug & play and flashdrives. ;)

ah yeah definately, when im working on a retro machine you forget how lucky we are on modern machines, USB floppy drive out, find a floppy, plug it into my modern machine, copy the Win98 usb flash drive driver to floppy, insert floppy into win 98 machine, install driver, reboot, now you are ready to use the USB flash drive, 10 minutes later!!!

As I don't own a usb floppy drive, I have to fire up the W2k machine, download the driver, copy the file to working disk, shut down the W2k machine, connect mouse, keyboard and monitor to the Win98 machine, fire it up and finally install the driver. :P

think you need to get yourself on ebay hehe! ive got an HP usb floppy drive, i think the manufacturer date on it is somthing silly like 2010! im not sure if the actual drive in the enclosure will be refurbished rather than a new part

ill try and buy a spare and do an opening up video for the channel! to settle my curiosity on a build date if there is any sticker or stamps
